Welcome to the World of Newcity: advertisers, writers, artists, photographers, publicists, vendors and friends

Lit 50 is coming June 2

Special Issues No Comments »

Newcity is pleased to announce the return of our biggest literary issue of the year, Lit 50: Who Really Books in Chicago, timed to coincide with the Midwest’s biggest literary event, the Printers Row Lit Fest.

While last year’s edition chronicled Chicago’s leading writers, poets, book designers, and so on, this year we look at those who exert influence over Chicago’s literary culture, including many of the behind-the-scenes individuals who bring Chicago’s literary world  to life in ways big and small.

It will be an issue that lovers of the book cannot miss.

If you have not reserved space, please do so. This edition will reach Chicago’s most avid supporters of the literary arts, not to mention that your investment will help support Newcity’s ongoing increase in literary coverage at a time when everyone else is stepping back.

Please reserve space by this Friday, May 26. Artwork is due Tuesday, May 31 at noon.

And be sure to keep up with our literary coverage at Newcity Lit .

Coming May 26: Summer Guide, the Official Users Manual for Sunshine

Special Issues No Comments »

Newcity owns summer in Chicago.

We launched it seventeen years ago, as a promotion for our Summer Guide edition, which we wanted to call “the official users manual for sunshine” and thought it would work better if there were an actual sunny season to help audiences understand what we were getting at. It was very popular and we decided to expand it from a one-time promotional tie-in into one of the perpetual seasons. Where there were only three major seasons, now there are four. (Summer is like the Fox Network of seasons, though less right-wing.) For many of us, this newfangled thing we call summer is now the most popular.

You’re welcome.

Whether you’re selling a swimsuit for the beach, or shorts for the beer garden; whether you’re operating a beer garden or an al fresco restaurant; whether you’re selling beer, wine or picnic baskets to pack for a night at Ravinia; or whether you are Ravinia or Pitchfork, the potential riches of summer abound. And of course we can’t forget theater productions, art shows and street fairs. Read the rest of this entry »

Newcity’s Breakout Artists, our biggest art issue, hits Artropolis week

Special Issues No Comments »

Newcity’s April 28 issue—”Breakout Artists: Chicago’s Next Generation of Image Makers”—will be our eighth annual edition devoted to showcasing Chicago’s top emerging artists. Each new edition of Newcity’s Breakout Artists issue has become the talk of Chicago during the course of the Art Chicago/NEXT/Artropolis art fairs.

So who should advertise in this issue? Well anyone connected to the art world, either as an exhibition venue, a teacher of art or as a seller of art, of course. But beyond that, anyone interested in connecting to culture in its most exuberant form, or reaching the consumers of art—often the most demographically desirable of all—whether to offer them a place to eat, to shop, or to have a cocktail. To inquire about rates and space availability, email advertising@newcity.com.

Space Reservation Deadline: Thursday, April 21

Materials Deadline: Friday, April 22 (preferred), Monday, April 25 (late)

Newcity to publish The Record Store Issue April 14

Special Issues No Comments »

In 2006, Newcity published its Indie Record Store Guide, designed to celebrate the precious resource that these venues are to our lives. We must have been onto something because, about a year later, Record Store Day was born, a national event designed to celebrate, to cherish the glories of old-fashioned off-line independent local retail in a sector of the marketplace devastated by new technologies. RSD brings everyone together in the stores, with bands  performing, special promotions, etc. As a core element of The Record Store Issue, we’re going to publish a new edition of our Indie Record Store Guide, along with a guide to key RSD events in Chicago.

Issue Date: April 14
Advertising Deadline: April 8

Note: Newcity does not publish 4-21, but returns 4-28 with Breakout Artists

Newcity is pleased to announce the return of our biggest performing arts issue of the year, The Players: Chicago’s leading performers.

Once again, we’ll be chronicling the many behind-the-scenes individuals who bring Chicago theater, dance, opera, comedy and performance to life. It’s an insight into the inner workings of Chicago’s arts culture that you can’t find anywhere else, any time.

It will be an issue that lovers of the stage cannot miss.

If you have not reserved space, please do so. This edition will reach Chicago’s most avid supporters of the performing arts, not to mention that your investment will help support Newcity’s ongoing increase in coverage at a time when everyone else is stepping back. And it is timed to serve as a winter/spring preview of sorts, hitting as most of the second half of the season is just getting underway.

Our performing arts rates are quite reasonable, even for color ads. Please reserve space by next Friday, January 14. Artwork is due Monday, January 17.
